Dr. John P. Malan is a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. An Idaho native, he graduated from Nampa High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Boise State University, graduating magna cum laude.
Following his university studies, Dr. Malan accepted a scholarship from the US Navy and obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California San Francisco. He continued to excel in his academic studies and went on to complete his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the University of Washington in Seattle.
During his 4 year residency, Dr. Malan trained alongside medical residents in internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, emergency medicine, and other specialty areas. He also received intensive training in oral and facial surgery including wisdom teeth removal and other complicated dental extractions, maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery, head and neck pathology, and dental implant surgery. Dr. Malan is a strong advocate for advanced technology including computed tomography (CT scan), 3D and digital treatment planning for many of his surgeries.
A highlight in residency was the opportunity to participate in the Hearts in Motion Cleft Lip and Palate medical missions to Guatemala. Dr. Malan served as resident surgeon and Spanish translator. Each year hundreds of patients were treated, including many requiring complex facial surgeries.
Immediately following residency, Dr. Malan began his active duty service in the US Navy in Okinawa Japan. There he was proud to serve nearly 50,000 active duty members and their families as staff oral surgeon for 3rd Dental Battalion and later as Department Head of Oral Surgery and Dentistry at Naval Hospital Okinawa. After three years in Okinawa, he was transferred to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he completed his active duty commitment. During his military service, Dr. Malan received multiple awards and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Married, with 3 children, Dr. Malan is thrilled to be home in Idaho with friends and family. In his spare time he enjoys all things outdoors including backpacking, fishing, hunting, biking, swimming, and running.
